What is Holistic Nutrition?

Holistic simply means looking at the whole person, body, mind, and spirit. Every person is individual; even though we are all made up of the same stuff, we are all bio-mechanically different and all have different needs, experiences, thoughts, and stresses that make us who we are and affects what we need to achieve optimal health. As a Holistic Nutritionist* I make recommendations using whole, live, natural foods to improve nutritional imbalances and give you lifestyle recommendations to help you reach your goals and, in many cases, ease symptoms of many common conditions like acne, arthritis, digestive disorders etc.

Why take this approach?

Many times we are told to follow a food guide based on your age and sex, watch your portions, burn more calories than what you take in, don't eat after 7 pm, etc. We see what works for one person and want to do whatever they did to reach their goals. While this is fine general advice, it is general advice and hardly takes your individual needs into account. It can also get extremely confusing with all the conflicting information and fad diets out there. Constantly counting calories and eating diet foods doesn't sound very appealing nor makes for a balanced lifestyle. We tend to lose touch with what our bodies are telling us that it needs and think our bodies are misbehaving instead of the reality: our bodies are reacting to how we are treating it! If we're tired, load up on caffeine instead of getting rest; if a food gives us heartburn we take ant-acids instead of avoiding that food; if we are hungry we eat convenient foods or meal replacement shakes or supplements instead of making a meal. By getting back to and understanding the basics of nutrition and how our body works we eventually learn to listen to our body's cues that let us know what it needs!

When we know better we do better. I believe that we are in charge of our health and education is the first step towards achieving optimal health. The next step is understanding why we make the food and lifestyle choices we do and having the tools to make better choices. In our initial assessment we will go over a customized action plan based on your needs, goals and health concerns. Whether it is general nutrition advice, regular support, recipes, or full meal planning, I work with you, helping you to take charge of your health.
